The Dutch company Fairphone wants to make a difference. The company was founded in 2013 with the aim of creating smartphones that are as sustainable and fairly produced as possible. To achieve this, Fairphone is transparent about its production process and places a strong emphasis on modular design. This means you get a more responsibly produced smartphone that is also designed to be easy to repair and use for longer.
Fairphone's current smartphone range includes the Fairphone (Gen. 6) and the newer Fairphone (Gen. 6+). Both devices continue Fairphone's focus on sustainability, repairability and long-term use. Thanks to their modular design, various components can be replaced individually if something breaks or wears out. This helps extend the lifespan of the phone instead of requiring you to replace the entire device.
The Fairphone (Gen. 6) combines a compact design with modern smartphone features and is built using recycled materials. Fairphone provides long-term software support, while components such as the battery and cameras can be replaced relatively easily. The newer Fairphone (Gen. 6+) builds on the same sustainable design but offers more powerful hardware, including a newer processor and 12GB of RAM. Fairphone also continues to focus on better working conditions, responsibly sourced materials and a more transparent supply chain.
